Quartz is the second most abundant mineral in Earth's continental crust, after feldspar. Its crystal structure is a continuous framework of SiO4 silicon–oxygen tetrahedra, with each oxygen being shared between two tetrahedra, giving an overall chemical formula of SiO2.

45 years ago an Italian company invented a process that simulated the volcanic effect, through a process that crushes the Quartz into controlled sizes and compresses it into slabs. The first application was floor tile, which is still the most durable/maintenance-free floor on the market. Over the years, resins where developed to bond natural pigments to the quartz to add to its design aspects.

Natural stone and Silestone® are composed of quartz and silica. Quartz is one of the hardest naturally occurring elements found on the earth and Silestone® is up to 93% quartz, which is much higher than some, if not all, natural stones. These elements are bonded together with resins and colorfast pigments to assure consistency in coloring with the added features of stain resistance, heat resistance and significantly less susceptibility to cracking.

How Scratch Resistant Is Silestone®?

There are only three natural stones (diamond, sapphire and topaz) harder than quartz. This makes that Silestone® is high resistant to scratches. Taking in consideration the Mohs hardness scale, the position of the quartz is 7 (diamond is 10). Therefore, using the same knife in different surfaces, Silestone® will not be scratched easily. Silestone® is high resistant to scratches, however it is recommended not to abuse its characteristics.

Is Silestone® Shock Resistant?

Silestone® has great shock resistance, in most cases considerably higher than of other products used for similar applications (granite, solid surfaces, etc) which guarantees safety in the kitchen when handling very hard objects (pans, trays, etc). This resistance is achieved thanks to its quartz (which gives it its hardness ) and poliéster resin (elasticity) and the vibrocompression system used during the production process.
